Don't Throw Your Old Pillow Cases Away! Another Easy Pillow Project.

We recently bought a new bed that was a different size than our old one. I was getting all of the old sheets together to give away when I found a set in the back of the linen closet that was made of cotton and cream colored. Hmmm, I am always on the lookout for fabrics to make pillows with and love that a pillow case has a tight weave to take an iron on transfer really well.

I started by ironing the end of the pillow case really well. (yes, the picture above is before I ironed it!) :) I then put a board inside of the pillow case so both sides weren't touching.

I printed off this cute bike graphic that I purchased for $1 from Graphique on etsy.com.

**** Please note that if you are trying to transfer a graphic with writing on it, be sure to FLIP the image in Picnik or other program before copying it. (In Picnik, it's in the ROTATE tab).

I used my trusty Jolee's Easy Image Transfer sheets (purchased at Michael's) and my inkjet printer.

I cut pretty close to the image so there wasn't a lot of white edging showing. I ironed it on and let it cool completely before peeling off the backing.

I used an Ikea pillow insert (the long, skinny one that's about 20"x14") that I had on hand. I think the inserts are about $6 at Ikea.

I cut the open edge of the pillowcase to the size of the pillow insert and only had to sew one side.

And here's the finished project:

This was such an easy project and cost me almost nothing!

I am excited to use the other pillow cases and the fabric from the sheets to make some more things.

Easy Fixes for Outdated Frames

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I have had a couple of framed pictures on our bedside tables for almost 20 years. In the same frames. Yes, silver and gold frames were all the rage in the 1990's!

Recently I came to the conclusion that some serious updating was needed.

Here's what I did to update this one:

Those decorative knots in the corners were tough, but I just kept wrapping and wrapping until I could no longer see the shiny silver and gold. The corners look a little bulky, but I kind of like the one of a kind-ness of it.

I hot glued some wire to the back to hang it.

Because I wrapped the jute around (and around and around--OMG, how many times do I have to wrap this darn thing???), the glass wouldn't fit in it. I needed to find another use for it. Here's what I came up with.

I ended up using about 3/4 of the roll of jute on this 5x7 frame.

I superglued the starfish right to the wall.

(As for the picture by our bed, I put it in a new wooden frame)

I found a wooden frame at a thrift store for $1. I painted it blue and added burlap and batting. I then glued a starfish onto the burlap. I got this idea from Cottage Living-from the Beach to the Burb's Blogpost

Here's what they look like on the wall. The lower one doesn't show up very well in this picture, but looks fine in real life.

I made the starfish pillow using a graphic I found online. I used an Ikea pillow cover and insert. I copied it onto TAP Transfer paper, cut it close to the edges and ironed it on like I did with some other pillows HERE.

I hardly spent any money on any of these things and am happy with the way they turned out.

Spring has Sprung and My First Giveaway

I was so excited to see my daffodils blooming yesterday! Finally!!

I'd say that over half of them are blooming!

Here's what it looked like just a few days ago:

And today? The whole area is covered in 6" of snow!! UGH!!! (Sorry, no picture of the snow. I don't want to know just yet if the blooms are damaged...)

Cute Graphics + Ikea = FAB Pillows!

I made some fun and easy pillows this weekend. I think they turned out great.

I started with this pillow cover that I purchased at Ikea.

I used this graphic that I found on The Graphics Fairy's blog. I absolutely LOVE The Graphics Fairy's blog!! I flipped the image so it would work correctly when I ironed it on the pillow. You can flip an image in Picasa by pressing Control/Shift/H.

I bought this package of Jolee's Easy Image Transfer Sheets for White Fabrics from Michael's. I saw on The Mango Archive's Blog that she used iron on transfers on dishtowels. I figured it'd work on pillows too.

I copied the graphic onto the transfer paper using my inkjet printer.

The directions on the transfer paper say not to use directly on an ironing board, so I used our old bread board with an old pillow case over it. Then I put the bread board and old pillowcase INSIDE the new pillow cover. I didn't want the graphic to somehow get heated to both sides. (not sure that it would have, but didn't want to find out.)

I ironed the pillow a little, so the major wrinkles were out, but didn't go crazy getting it perfect.

I then cut the transfer paper. But please note--cut closer to the image than I did here! This was my first attempt and the transfer paper does show up around the edges. You need a little bit of an edge--about 1/2" is probably good.

I placed the transfer paper on the pillow cover and made sure it was centered pretty well.

I used an iron without steam set on COTTON. I put the iron on one spot and held it for 20 seconds. I would then lift the iron up and set it down on another spot for 20 seconds. I made sure all of the areas were ironed, especially the edges. I probably set the iron down at least in ten different places to make sure I got everything.

I peeled the paper backing off carefully and the image stuck to the pillow.

On this one, you can see where I messed up and didn't cut close enough to the image, so you can see the transfer paper. I did cut the paper closer in pillows I made after this one and they all look great. Even though the edges show up on this first one, it is not nearly as noticeable once the pillow insert is put in.

Here's another one I made. I collect old scales and love this image too!
